Finish Turning the OD of an Interrupted Cut Plastic Part

Written by Adam Persson | Sep 15, 2025 6:00:00 PM

This beauty is our Part of the Week. Let's take a look!

WHAT'S THIS?

In this short video we're horizontal turning an interrupted length of food grade Delrin plastic.

Shavings. Not snow.

THAT'S COOL!

The part previously had a number of operations performed before what we're seeing here. One tricky part of this is that maintaining the part's straightness despite the volume of missing material in the center is always a challenge. Fortunately, EMI regularly performs this sort of trick so our team was up to the challenge.

In addition, we needed to maintain the integrity of the edges of the interrupted cuts while finishing the outer surface for both smoothness and dimensional accuracy. You can see from the very fine, thinner-than-hair white threads of removed material that our machinist took time and care to make the result perfect down to only a few thousandths of an inch.

ABOUT POW!

Each week we will feature something we've been working on. We hope you'll find these posts informative.
