Design for Manufacturing

Many are familiar with DFM, which is the discipline of designing products with cost control and ease of manufacturing in mind.

DFM is a broad concept that encompasses the entire manufacturing process from material selection and machining, to assembly and packaging.

Design for Assembly

DFA, is a component of DFM and promotes designing products with fewer parts, easier handling, reduced assembly steps, and disambiguation of orientation to prevent incorrect orientation and mis-alignment during assembly.

Design for Machinability

Also a component of DFM, the "Other DFM" is Design for Machinability.

The goals of DF-Machinability are minimizing machining time, reducing tool wear and efficiently arriving at final dimensional accuracy, all of which drive cost reduction.
