ENGINEERING SUPPORT

Access to Decades of Expertise

DFM, DFA & the Other DFM

Many are familiar with DFM, or Design for Manufacturing, which is the discipline of designing products with cost control and ease of manufacturing in mind. DFM is a broad concept encompassing the entire manufacturing process from material selection and machining, to assembly and packaging.

DFA, which stands for Design for Assembly, is a component of DFM and promotes designing products with fewer parts, easier handling, reduced assembly steps, and disambiguation of orientation to prevent incorrect orientation and mis-alignment during assembly.

The "Other DFM" is Design for Machinability. The goals of DF-Machinability are minimizing machining time, reducing tool wear and arriving at final dimensional accuracy as efficiently as possible, all of which drive cost reduction.

Quite simply, DFM and standardization permit scalability in modern manufacturing. DFM looks at the entire manufacturing process and includes both DFA and DF-Machinability.

A significant benefit of working with EMI's engineering support team for our customer partners is that they gain access to decades of both engineering and manufacturing expertise that draws from a wide pool of experience across many industries.
