Turning & Milling & Finishing, Oh My!

This beauty is our Part of the Week. Let's take a look!

WHAT'S THIS?

Optical parts combine the critical needs both for high precision engineering and for 100% control of photons. Below are two views of an optical housing we recently completed for a customer in this space.

THAT'S COOL!

Made from 6061 aluminum, this part required turning on one of our CNC lathes, followed by 5-axis CNC milling to achieve the very tight tolerances our customer requires.

A ring of power, of a sort.

After machining and a quick QC check, the part then headed to our deburring department to get it ship shape. Following another stop in QC, the next step was to send it out for black anodizing to control for stray photons.

Many of our customers ask us to manage surface finishing activities on their behalf. The anodizing process creates a certain amount of anodic build up which will change the final dimensions of the finished part. Of course, EMI accounts for this build up when create our plan to machine parts.

For an optical part with the tight tolerances required like this one, it's important to work with a trusted anodizing partner. With Boston's rich history of education and research in electrochemistry, we are blessed to have long-standing relationships with world class plating and anodizing houses, all within a short drive from our facility.

Still ring-shaped and powerful from this angle, too.

After anodizing, the part returned to EMI for a final QC check before heading to the customer.

And the final result speaks for itself.
